Cosmopolitan Fun Fearless Females Nomination

I was told by some friends from the CSIRO (Australia's top Science organization) that I have been nominated as one of Cosmopolitan's "Fun Fearless Females". Cosmopolitan's web site comments "2014 nominees have been announced! Inspiring women doing amazing things. What’s not to love? We’ve searched far and wide and found Australia’s top 80 women of 2014, now it’s up to you to vote for your favorites and help decide the winners."

I was both startled and honored to be included. I think I am the youngest, and am definitely the only one of the 80 to be pictured in school uniform!!! This is my Friends' School uniform. I transferred to pre-University classes in Friends' School after Ogilvie High School, because Ogilvie does not teach beyond Grade 10. I think it says a lot for the quality of my education in Ogilvie and Friends, that a girl who is still at school could be included in Cosmopolitan's top 80 list!

Tuckwell Scholarship

Some students from the Australian National University came to our school, and suggested we apply for the Tuckwell scholarship which is the result of an incredibly generous donation from the Graham and Louise Tuckwell Foundation. We applied, and were among 570 applicants, so we did not have much hope, but it is always worth trying!

Pride of Australia Medal - Inspiration Category

I was delighted to hear that my mentor has been nominated in the Tasmanian division of the Pride of Australia - Inspiration Category. A photographer from The Mercury came to take his photograph, and they posed him with some of my LEGO robots. My mentor reckoned that they must have used Photoshop to make him look so good! .

I just want to say a HUGE congratulations to my close friend and mentor, Dr. Graeme Faulkner, for WINNING the PRIDE OF AUSTRALIA INSPIRATION MEDAL for 2014!

Senior Australian of the Year

I was thrilled to hear my mentor was also a finalist in the Tasmanian Division of the "Senior Australian of the Year"!

Senior Australian of Year 2015 Tasmania Finalist Graeme Faulkner

On top of mentoring me, he has taught robotics in many TAG workshops, at local Tasmanian schools, and he has dedicated the past 10 years to creating websites and online courses to assist young robotics enthusiasts worldwide. But here's the catch... he did it ALL FOR FREE. Never once as he asked for ANY money or recognition for his work - not even through his website or his courses - because he says the only form of gratification he wants is to see the new generations reach their full potential. I do not think there is anyone more worthy of the award than him. He is my role model, and I am so incredibly honoured to have known him for so long.

Tuckwell Scholarship - conditional offer from Australian National University.

The scholarship applications were cut down to 185, and then 75 were chosen to be flown to Canberra for personal interviews with the Selection Committee. The 75 included three Tasmanians, and I was one of them! Wow! Even if I get nowhere, just to be included in this list is an honour.

I felt really nervous being interviewed by people as distinguished as Graham Tuckwell, but I met some marvelous people who had applied for the Scholarship, and it was a wonderful weekend.

Then the final Tuckwell Scholarship list came out. Unbelievable! I was offered one of the scholarships, provided I obtained a good final result in my International Baccalaureate exams. I am really going to have to work very hard between now and the end of the year. A Tuckwell Scholarship is an opportunity that is just too good to miss.

National Science Week 2014

I felt privileged to be invited by His Excellency the Honourable Chief Justice Alan Blow and Mrs. Blow to a National Science Week Reception at Tasmania's beautiful Government House.

Leaving Formal

We have just had our end of year Formal at School. Mum took this photo of me before I went.

I have grown, and I was worried I would not fit into my dress, but fortunately it was OK.

Final (Real) Certificates

Friends' School hands out certificates to recognize student achievements. I received a leavers certificate to attest that I had attended Friends' School. I was also lucky enough to be awarded a Sports Council Certificate of Merit, Colours for Service, Full Colours for Music plus an order for a Music Full Colours Gold Pocket Embroidery, and a Clemes Certificate for Creativity Action and Service. I was thrilled!

Final (Mock) Certificate

On the final school day before the International Baccalaureate exams, we had some fun "Mock Awards". There were 200 students and 28 Mock Awards, so I was not expecting to be recognized - but I was! Click here to see what mock certificate I was given. :-)

Friends' School FOCUS Newspaper Article

The October 2014 Friends' School FOCUS Newspaper was kind enough to mention me in article on page three.
